FITNESS RUNNERs Accelerade Athlete
Meet Dan Powell. Dan's passion for athletics goes beyond running and beyond PRs. At 43, Powell is halfway through a plan to complete seven Ironman triathlon events on six continents in five years, while raising $400,000 for charity. So far he's completed Ironman events in California, Switzerland, New Zealand, and 2 events in Hawaii and has raised $133,000.
Powell, an RAC member since 1995, from San Diego, California, began running in 1980 and averages 12-15 miles a week. In addition, he bikes about 47 miles a week, swims two to three days a week and practices yoga about every three days.
His favorite places to run are on the beach at low tide and at Torrey Pines State Reserve. One of his favorite races is the San Diego Triathlon Challenge, a half-lronman event that benefits the Challenged Athletes Foundation, an organization that raises funds to support physically challenged athletes through grants, equipment, race fees and more.
As a single father, he enjoys doing events with his 14-year-old daughter, Dawn. Last September, the two rode a tandem bike from New York City to Washington D.C. (270 miles) in three days. And if all this wasn't enough, in April, Powell plans on riding across country (3,198 mile) with six other athletes in the Unity Challenge to raise money for Athletes Helping Athletes, the Road Runner Sports charity which provides adaptive sports equipment, such as handcycles, to children with disabilities.
Congratulations, Dan!
